Semiconductor Radiation Detectors

Semiconductor Radiation DetectorsBuilding upon Centronic’s extensive experience in the design and manufacture of electro optic devices, our expertise has been extended to detection of other types of radiation. This has focused initially on detection of x-rays.

X-ray detectors utilise silicon photodiode technology but with the addition of a crystal or membrane of scintillator material that is able to convert the higher energy x-rays into the visible spectrum, which can be detected by a photodiode. There are a variety of scintillator materials available today such as Caesium Iodide (CsI), Cadmium Tungstate (CdWO4) crystals and Gadolinium Oxide membranes. Any of the available photodiodes (single element or linear / matrix arrays) in the 5T range (refer to electro optics product range) can be used as a basis for x-ray detectors and if required, custom diodes can be designed to suit a specific application.

Scintillators can be provided in any of the available materials with the thickness tailored to suit a particular energy range.

Packaging can be designed to suit the application and if required the detectors can be potted to exclude ambient light affecting the x-ray signal.

Some typical examples are listed below;

Detector
Element Size mm2
Scintillator

Single element 12 CdW04 Ceramic
Single element 35 CdW04 Ceramic
16 Element 4.4 Csl PCB
16 Element 5 Csl PCB

Whilst bespoke products have been supplied for various applications, development work is continuing to extend the range of semiconductor radiation detectors for measurement of α, β, γ and neutron radiation.

Due to our policy of continued development, specifications are subject to change without notice.
